Her parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor and Jan O'Grady. Her family lived in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Before making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady started her career by modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was later cast in a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
