O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performance. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the bottom 3, and bottom 2. They were stunned by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for those with great singing talent such as Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The performance she gave on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
